Papa John’s Issues An Apology After Blaming National Anthem Protests On Low Sales

Papa John’s recently caught some backlash after they blamed low pizza sales on the NFL anthem protests. According to The Root, CEO of Papa Johns, John Schnatter talked about how “the NFL has hurt us.” He then went on to talk about how he was disappointed that “the NFL and its leadership did not resolve this.”

When Schnatter was talking about resolving the situation he was referring to NFL players kneeling during the anthem. Players kneeled during it to express their First Amendment right and have a silent protest. Recently on Twitter the pizza company issued an apology.
They said, “The statements made on our earnings call were describing the factors that impact our business and we sincerely apologize to anyone that thought they were divisive. That definitely was not our intention.” In another tweet they mentioned,”We believe in the right to protest inequality and support the players’ movement to create a new platform for change. We also believe together, as Americans, we should honor our anthem. There is a way to do both.” Since Schnatter’s comments his his companies stock and fallen almost 13 percent.
