Trump Picks Ohio Senator JD Vance as Running Mate

Former President Donald Trump has chosen Ohio Senator JD Vance as his vice-presidential running mate. Trump made the announcement Monday afternoon, ahead of the start of the Republican National Convention, revealing his selection later than usual for recent cycles.
Fox News’ Bret Baier confirmed the news early Monday after speaking with Trump prior to RNC.
Trump: “Yes, we’re going to get the VP today”.
Trump’s selection process included three finalists: Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, and Gov. Doug Burgum of North Dakota. Trump stated he wanted the process to be a “highly sophisticated version of ‘The Apprentice.’” The former President also says he wanted to rely on his “instincts”.

Who Is Senator JD Vance?
JD Vance, who has served in the Senate since 2023, quickly rose as a prominent figure in the MAGA movement. Vance was born and raised in Middletown, Ohio, one of the states manufacturing town. According to his biography, he overcame a turbulent childhood with the help of his grandmother, “Mamaw”. After serving in the Iraq War as a Marine, Vance graduated from The Ohio State University and Yale Law School.
Vance authored a best-selling memoir “Hillbilly Elegy,” which became a Netflix film. He later founded a business aimed at “creating jobs in the American heartland”. Vance advocates for national conservatism, emphasizing tight borders, tariffs, and state intervention in the economy. He has been endorsed an supported by Donald Trump Jr. for years.

In the days leading up to the convention, Trump had final discussions with the finalists. The assassination attempt against Trump at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, highlighted the importance of selecting a capable vice president.
Trump stressed the need for a qualified vice president, stating, “You need somebody that can be good just in case, that horrible just in case.”
Vance, despite being a recent convert to MAGA, gained Trump’s endorsement in 2022, securing his Senate seat.
