The NFL is once again showing that it will give football players second and third chances if they’re talented enough—regardless of how awful their crimes are.

Cleveland Browns running back Kareem Hunt will serve an eight-game suspension for hitting and kicking a woman outside his Cleveland residence. Hunt played 11 games for the Chiefs last season before being released after video of the incident surfaced—video that both the NFL and the Kansas City Chiefs had access to months before it became public.

The Cleveland Browns just brought in Odell Beckham Jr. to help shore up what promises to be a high-powered offense. And when Kareem Hunt is on the field, he’s been as good as anyone lining up behind the quarterback.

Cleveland signed Hunt to a one-year contract last month with zero guaranteed money. The $1.1 million deal has playing incentives, meaning he won’t see at least half of that because he’s missing half of the season.

Hunt has been apologetic since the incident, and recently released a statement apologizing for hitting the woman.

“I want to again apologize for my actions last year,” he said. “I know that my behavior hurt a lot of people, and I again apologize to them. I respect the league’s decision on discipline, and I appreciate the time I spent with Commissioner [Roger] Goodell last week. I’m grateful for my time with the Browns over the last month and thankful to all the people in the organization that have welcomed me. I also appreciate all of the support I received from my union through this process. My commitment to earning the trust of the league, my teammates, the organization and this community through my actions will continue, and I understand there is a lot of hard work ahead of me before I’m able to fully return to playing the game I love.”

Hunt wasn’t charged in the incident, but the video was pretty damning. The second-year running back has his second chance. Hopefully, he can learn from his horrifying mistake and become a better person on and off the field.
