Da Brat got out of prison in 2011 and made a promise to herself that if she returned it would be through the front door. She spent two and a half years at Alto State Prison after pleading guilty of hitting a woman in the face with a rum bottle. According to 11 Alive through “The Rickey Smiley For Real television show she was able to speak with the ladies that are in prison.

Da Brat said, “I’ve always wanted to go back and talk to women, inspire women and tell them they can. It’s OK to make mistakes. Just try not to make the same mistakes over.” While walking in the hallways Da Brat got a funny feeling over her. She was ready to inspire the ladies, listen to their stories and try to give them advice. Da Brat said, “It was kind of an eerie feeling for me because I never wanted to be back in that situation, but this time I was on the other side, and I was hopefully touching somebody’s heart.”

Da Brat got to talk with several inmates Sandy Reed, Tammy Rushin, Lasherae Davis, and Thelisa Ward which are all at the South Fulton jail. Ward said, “It was very enlightening because people can go to jail, and good people do bad things. It gave me hope, and it gave us all hope.” The ladies all got emotional and for one of the ladies it was a reunion with Da Brat. Rushin braided her hair while she was in jail and Da Brat couldn’t help but tell her that she shouldn’t be there. Da Brat ended her visit with a prayer with the ladies and hoped to see them all when they get out.
