The after math of Hurricane Maria has left Puerto Rico in shambles. Many can’t get in touch with their families because of power loss and don’t even have clean water to drink. According to The Daily News, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission approved Alphabet Inc’s application to help provide cellular service to Puerto Rico through balloons.

Google is a parent company of Alphabet Inc. Since the storm nearly 83% of cell sites continue to be out of service in Puerto Rico. In 2013 Project Loon was launched where they use solar-powered, high-altitude balloons to help provide internet service in certain locations.

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai made an announcement for a Hurricane Recovery Task Force with will help address the challenges in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Pai said, “It is critical that we adopt a coordinated and comprehensive approach to support the rebuilding of communications infrastructure and restoration of communications services.” We hope Puerto Rico continues to get the help it needs.
