The word “jawn” in Philadelphia can be used to describe anything and everything. According to Philly Voice, Merriam-Webster will possibly take the word “jawn” and possibly catalogue it. The word was listed in the “Words We’re Watching” column that was published last week.

In the article it also mentioned that the root of the word took from the slang term “joint.” The Sugarhill Gang used “joint” in “Rapper’s Delight” and that’s where it acquired noun-like qualities. Michael Nutter said, “This sense of joint quickly spread among hip-hop fans up and down the east coast—including Philly. And this is where the story goes jawn-ward.”

Although the word isn’t in the dictionary yet it’s amazing that Merriam-Webster is even considering it. Recently more uncommon words have been going into the dictionary. Do you think this will happen?
