A Dayton, Ohio pastor was allegedly shot and killed by his younger brother in his church office Sunday as service was coming to a close.
Police are investigating the shooting of the victim, identified as Rev. William B. Schooler, a former educator and community organizer said to have deep roots in the Dayton community. His death and the arrest of his 68-year-old brother, Daniel Gregory Schooler, has shocked the community the pastor served.
“He had deep roots in the community,” a friend, Ronnie Moreland, told the newspaper. “He was a beloved leader. It’s hard to put into words what has happened.”
Dayton City Commissioner Joey Williams told the Daily News he had discussed with Schooler ways to reduce violence in the community.
“For him to be a victim of violence is just extremely saddening,” Williams said.
Police are still investigating a motive, but so far, they do not know what led to the shooting. A niece of the Schooler brothers told the Dayton Daily News that Daniel Schooler had a history of mental health issues.
She believes those issues played a role in the tragic shooting.
“I would think it has to be something’s going on in his head to do something like that, because we were raised to love,” Joyce Napier told the newspaper. “Family matters — that’s the way were raised.”
Rev. Schooler, 70, was the only intended victim.
The pastor’s younger brother is currently being held on a murder charge at the Montgomery County jail, Sgt. Richard Blommel confirmed.
