Did anyone ask for this? The perpetually creepy, but amazingly talented singer, Lorde decided to cover Jeremih’s smash hit “Don’t Tell ‘Em” and good Lordt, it’s just as weird as you’d think it would be. Weirder even. Matter of fact, don’t tell Jeremih, don’t tell ‘em, nooooo!

Don’t get me wrong, in certain parts of the song, Lorde is killing it. Her melodically haunting voice laced over the trivial lyrics of kissing and not telling is adorable, but I’m not here for her dance moves…let’s call them faux urban body jerkings. It’s like a bounce, but also raising the roof during a seizure. You remember raising the roof, right? Lorde just brought it back.

The original version of Jeremih’s “Don’t Tell ‘Em” is an upbeat dance anthem and Lorde somehow manages to make it sound like what Wednesday Addams would listen to while she’s putting on her makeup. Now don’t get me wrong, I love when singers cover some of our favorite hip hop songs: like when The Fray covered Kanye West’s “Heartless,” or when one of my faves Karmin slayed Lil’ Wayne’s “6 Foot 7.” However, this is just somehow not working. Perhaps, Lorde should have tried to cover something else. Perhaps a T-Pain tune? Imagine Lorde singing “Buy You A Drank…” good, right? Well at minimum, it’d have to be comical.
