16-year-old Sachia Vickery is steadily rising among the ranks of America’s next great tennis stars, but her ascension has been anything but easy.
As she sacrificed on the court, her mother sacrificed off, working two jobs and enduring many disparaging days so that her daughter could continue to play.
Because of her mom’s effort, Vickery is making a definite impact, advancing to the second round of the United States Open girls’ draw this past weekend.
Whatever is the typical path of the typical American tennis phenom, Vickery has not followed it. She rode buses to tournaments with her grandmother, left the United States to play in France, and spent recent Christmases with LeBron James, whose mother, Gloria, is like an aunt to her.
