Trump Administration Moves to Strip Harvard’s Tax-Exempt Status After Cutting $2B in Federal Funds

In a significant escalation, the Trump administration has taken punitive measures against Harvard University, freezing over $2.2 billion in federal funding and threatening to revoke the institution’s tax-exempt status. These actions stem from Harvard’s refusal to comply with federal demands concerning its response to pro-Palestinian student protests and alleged antisemitism on campus.

The Department of Homeland Security has canceled two federal grants totaling $2.7 million and is considering revoking Harvard’s ability to enroll international students. The administration has demanded that Harvard submit detailed records of its international students’ alleged illegal activities by April 30. President Donald Trump has criticized Harvard’s political and ideological climate, accusing the university of promoting “woke” policies and tolerating antisemitism.

Conservative activist Christopher Rufo has called for further punitive action, including cutting all federal funding and revoking Harvard’s nonprofit status. The administration’s confrontation with Harvard represents its broader campaign to reshape higher education institutions it deems overly liberal, with similar actions initiated against Columbia University and others amidst rising tensions on U.S. campuses over pro-Palestinian protests and diversity issues.

The situation has drawn criticism from human rights groups and academic institutions, which have raised concerns about threats to free speech, academic freedom, and constitutional rights. Prominent Democratic politicians, including Joe Biden and Barack Obama, have voiced support for the university. Legal challenges are being mounted in response to these policies, and the IRS is expected to soon decide on revoking Harvard’s tax-exempt status.
As the standoff continues, Harvard and other universities are navigating a complex landscape of political pressure, legal challenges, and the imperative to uphold academic freedom and institutional autonomy.
