The fateful shooting occurred while Bailey—a St. Louis Ram at the time—was serving a four-game suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy with marijuana use. While riding around with a few family members in his native state of Florida, the unknown shooter pulled up beside the car and fired 30 shots. Two of them landed in his head, while others left his cousin, who was driving, with life-threatening injuries.
The two bullets fractured his skull. But after a full recovery, he’s ready to play football again. The 27-year-old athlete has been working out with Rams receiver Tavon Austin and the Steelers’ Antonio Brown to keep his skills sharp.
With all the injuries surrounding the NFL this year—like those that befell Aaron Rodgers, Odell Beckham Jr., and J.J. Watt— Good Morning Football’s Peter Schrager finally found the feel-good story of the season.
Stedman, a West Virginia University alumnus, spoke to DubVNation about his journey and his pending return. “Doctors say I can play. But it’ll be up to teams to clear me, which I’ll be looking at this off season,” he said.
That could prove a major hurdle, especially in today’s age of heightened awareness surrounding head injuries. The liability may not be worth the risk.
Either way, Bailey is ready to get on some teams’ radars. “I’ll be looking for teams to bring me in for workouts so they can see me move personally,” Bailey continued. “From there I know I’ll be good. Steddy ambition baby!”
