Octavius Valentine Catto was an educator and civil rights activist, now a statue honoring him will be outside of City Hall in Philadelphia. According to Okayplayer this is the first statue dedicated to an African American figure.

Mayor Jim Kenney said, “My hope is that someday, every child in Philadelphia will know as much about Octavius Valentine Catto as they do about Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, and Martin Luther King.” Kenney remembers when he first learned about Catto and referred to him as “a true American hero.” We hope others cities put up statues of African American figures.
