One year after the world lost Prince all too soon, his ex-wife Mayte Garcia pens an intimate recollection of her time with the legend. In The Most Beautiful: My Life with Prince, Garcia reveals it took years for her to get pregnant with his child. Then, right after she gave birth to their son Amiir in 1996, the unthinkable happened — the couple learned he had a rare genetic disorder, Pfeiffer syndrome type 2.

Pure joy,’ writes Garcia about those first moments after the birth. ‘And then they held the baby up to those harsh lights. The elation on my husband’s face turned to pure terror.’ Amiir died just six days later, with Garcia writing in an excerpt from her book in People that towards the end it became too difficult for the boy to even breathe.”

Garcia doesn’t believe Prince, who was 37 at the time, ever got over losing his son. She adds, “I don’t know how anybody can get over it. I know I haven’t.” You’ll be able to read more about this tragic time in their lives when Garcia’s book drops next month on April 4 2017.
