Remember 26-year-old North Carolina lottery winner Marie Holmes? She’s the woman who walked away with $88 million after taxes after playing the winning numbers in the North Carolina lottery in February. Holmes, a single mother of four, was living in a trailer with her kids and had just quit two fast food jobs to take care of one of them, who has special needs. So the world cheered when it seemed like Holmes was someone who deserved the money. Well, most of the world. Others sniped that the Black single mother would soon fall prey to fortune hunters and inexperience in handling such a huge amount of money.
Well, for some the latest news about Holmes seems to have proved her critics correct. Just recently Holmes was arrested along with her fiancè, Lamarr McDow, in a trailer near Holmes‘ hometown of Shallotte, North Carolina. McDow, (pictured, below) who authorities say is a validated gang member who goes by the street name Hot Sauce, according to North Carolina’s WWAYTV.com was arrested for violating an earlier probation curfew requirement that while wearing a GPS monitoring device. It’s alleged that he’s part of heroin distribution ring operating in the era. When a gun legally registered to Holmes was found in the home, McDow was charged with handling it and both he and Holmes were arrested for marijuana possession. McDow, police say, has a record going back to 200 for offenses including drug possession and assault on a female.
But Holmes is apparently loyal to her man. McDow was released despite a $6 million bond, authorities confirmed. Although a bondsman paid the bail and doesn’t have to identify who put up the money, Holmes herself commented on her Facebook page about the reports. (But don’t bother trying to friend her, unsurprisingly, she’s over the limit.)
What Y’all need to be worried about is Y’all money and not how I spend mine this is benefitting Y’all how? And no he’s no drug dealer or user but who are Y’all to judge anybody? I will definitely pray for Y’all because it’s much need…they talked about Jesus so I’m not surprised Y’all are talking about me but be blessed though,” Holmes posted.
If the idea was that Holmes would take the money and run far from North Carolina, she seems to have fallen short of the goal. Although she said and did the right things – hiring security, telling reporters she’d attend school, it must be kind of hard, even with that kind of money to leave everyone and everything she knows behind.
