Hours after she was sworn in as the first African-American woman to hold the office of Attorney General, Loretta Lynch released a statement about the recent protests in Baltimore, vowing to monitor the situation, CNN reports.
In a statement that condemned the acts of violence in Baltimore following the death of Freddie Gray — the 25-year-old man injured in police custody — Lynch also said she would send two officials from the Department of Justice to Baltimore to survey the clashes between police and residents.
According to The Hill, the head of the Civil Rights Division, Vanita Gupta, and Director of Community Oriented Policing Services, Ronald Davis, “will be traveling to Baltimore to meet with faith and community leaders, as well as city officials.”
“I condemn the senseless acts of violence by some individuals in Baltimore that have resulted in harm to law enforcement officers, destruction of property and a shattering of the peace in the city of Baltimore,” Lynch said. “Those who commit violent actions, ostensibly in protest of the death of Freddie Gray, do a disservice to his family, to his loved ones, and to legitimate peaceful protestors who are working to improve their community for all its residents.”
During a Monday meeting, Lynch reportedly assured President Obama that she would monitor the situation during a discussion about the unrest. The meeting, CNN writes, was not called specifically to address the situation in Baltimore.
