George Zimmerman's Attorney Will Not Use "Stand Your Ground" Defense
George Zimmerman’s Attorney: “The Facts Don’t Support A ‘Stand Your Ground’ Defense”
George Zimmerman claims to have fatally shot unarmed teen, Trayvon Martin in Florida in February in self-defense even though there’s an audio compilation that proves that Zimmerman can’t keep his story straight. It seems as though Zimmerman’s lawyer, Mark O’Mara isn’t trying to use Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” defense, instead he wants to get the case dismissed by using a traditional self-defense argument. “The facts don’t seem to support a ‘stand your ground’ defense,” O’Mara said.

O’Mara said the traditional self-defense approach is appropriate because the facts suggest Zimmerman couldn’t retreat from the beating Martin allegedly gave him. The “Stand Your Ground” defense allows the victim to use deadly force, rather than retreat from a confrontation if they feel their lives are being threatened. Even though O’Mara feels that there’s not enough facts to support “Stand Your Ground,” he still feels Zimmerman was acting in self-defense.
Every time I think Zimmerman and his supporters should just hang it up and accept his fate, they come up with a way to keep Zimmerman from facing what he deserves–prosecution. This may seem like a step in the right direction, but Zimmerman is still attempting to place the blame of Martin’s death essentially on Martin. Self-defense has an context of–if this person wasn’t attacking me, I wouldn’t need to attack them. Trayvon is gone. He can’t tell his side of the story, but I truly believe he lost his life trying to defend himself.
Do you think Zimmerman should be allowed to use any type of self-defense as a defense?
