The saying “better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt” is an apt description for “Love and Hip Hop Atlanta” star Lil Scrappy. On TMZ Live this week, Scrappy shared why he supports Frank Ocean’s decision to come out as a bisexual man:

“I’m glad that he came out … so all the real women that love to mess with real men, straight men, we can keep the AIDS situation down, you feel me? [Homosexuality] is a doorway to AIDS, scientifically.”
While Scrappy gets some cool points for showing love to Frank Ocean, he gets a FAIL in his knowledge of the deadly disease. While it is true that 61% of new HIV cases were MSM (men who have sex with men), there’s no conclusive evidence of how many “closeted” men have spread the disease to their female partners. His statement only adds to the “down low” hysteria that’s gripped the African-American community for years.
Here’s a statistic the reality star should take to heart:
“While blacks represent approximately 14% of the U.S. population, they accounted for almost half (46%) of people living with HIV in the U.S. in 2008, as well as an estimated 44% of new infections in 2009.”
What I find especially interesting is how Scrappy can indict the gay community on their sexual practices, yet keep a blind eye to all the bed-hopping on his own show. If the Mimi/Stevie J/ Joseline triangle isn’t a public service announcement on the dangers of unprotected sex, I don’t know what is.
In addition, Scrappy’s statement that “real men” are straight is just plain ignorant. I guess cultural luminaries like James Baldwin, Bayard Rustin, and Langston Hughes weren’t as manly because they loved and slept with other men. To quote Frank Ocean, “love is love.”
Here’s a thought Scrappy–if you really want to help keep the “AIDS situation” under control, why not talk about the importance of safe sex and routine HIV testing? Now that’s a scientific fact!
