Forty-seven days after Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in the Orlando, Florida suburb of Sanford, Zimmerman made his first court appearance Thursday.

Zimmerman has been charged with second degree murder in the 17-year-old’s death.

Seminole County Judge Mark Herr set Zimmerman’s arraignment for May 29. Zimmerman will be pleading not guilty on that date.

Zimmerman’s attorney, Mark O’Mara, asked that records containing personal information on witnesses be sealed. O’Mara did not ask that Zimmerman be released on bail, although he said earlier he would like a bond to be set for his client. He added, however, that being out on bail could jeopardize Zimmerman’s safety.
