During a recent Instagram Live, the rapper revealed that she signed up her daughter Kulture, 8, and son Wave, 4, for boxing classes. According to Cardi, it’s less about raising fighters and more about making sure her children know how to protect themselves as they grow up.

Growing up in the Bronx, Cardi said learning to stand your ground was part of life. Even though her children attend good schools, she believes they still need to know how to handle themselves if they’re ever in a difficult situation.

“This that age when you need to learn how to fight,” she said. “I ain’t going to be there for you all the time.”

Like most Cardi stories, the conversation quickly turned into comedy.

She joked that one day, when she’s older and can’t fight anymore, she’ll expect her kids to have her back. Putting on an elderly voice, Cardi imagined herself getting into an argument during bingo night and calling Kulture to come defend her.

“When I’m like about 60 and I’m talking s–t to these b–hes, that’s when you come in,” she joked, making both of her children laugh.

Kulture happily agreed, playing right along with her mom’s imaginary scenario.

Before ending the livestream, Cardi also shared a sweet observation about her oldest daughter. She said Kulture is starting to remind her more and more of herself as a child, especially when it comes to eating habits. Cardi laughed while explaining that she used to hate chewing food when she was younger, and now she’s noticing Kulture has some of those same tendencies.

The family update comes during a busy stretch for the Grammy-winning artist. She’s been celebrating another major career milestone after “WAP” earned its fourth Diamond certification, and her latest single, “AH HA,” recently debuted on the Billboard Hot 100. She’s also been making headlines after reigniting her public feud with fellow rapper BIA.

While Cardi’s comments about calling her kids to fight her battles were clearly made in fun, her reason for enrolling them in boxing is something she genuinely believes in. For her, learning how to defend yourself is a valuable life skill, and she wants her children to grow up feeling confident enough to take care of themselves, even when mom isn’t around.
