As immigrant families across the country live in fear, mourning sudden detentions and separations, a Florida sheriff’s menacing warning to protesters has stirred deep concern. Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey delivered a harsh message Thursday ahead of nationwide demonstrations opposing the surge in ICE arrests under the Trump administration.

“If you throw a brick, a firebomb, or point a gun at one of our deputies, we will be notifying your family where to collect your remains, because we will kill you, graveyard dead,” Ivey said during a press conference, referring to protesters expected to gather over the weekend.

His remarks—marked by violent rhetoric—come as ICE agents are accused of aggressively rounding up immigrants, including those with no criminal records, and detaining them without proper legal process. Advocates warn that many families are being separated without any chance to say goodbye or fight their cases in court.

Across the nation, peaceful protests have emerged in response to these raids. Demonstrators are demanding that the rights of immigrant families be respected and that due process be restored. But Ivey made it clear that in his county, even nonviolent acts of protest—such as blocking an intersection—could be met with force.

“If you block a roadway in Brevard County, you’re going to jail. If you flee arrest, we will chase you down,” he said. “If you mob a car, you might get run over and dragged across the street.”

His comments have been condemned by civil rights groups and immigrant advocates, who say that such threats only add to the climate of fear and intimidation already facing immigrant communities. “This is a moment when we should be protecting vulnerable families, not threatening violence against those trying to stand up for them,” one advocate said.

Meanwhile, the immigration crackdown continues to escalate. ICE arrests have increased across the country, with numerous reports of agents entering homes without warrants, detaining parents in front of their children, and ignoring asylum claims.

The tension is amplified by the Trump administration’s recent success in keeping National Guard troops deployed in California to assist ICE. A federal appeals court overturned a prior ruling that had blocked the deployment, further fueling fears of unchecked enforcement.

Sheriff Ivey, known for his theatrics and controversial statements, has previously been criticized for using law enforcement platforms to mock or publicly shame people. In 2023, he was sued after mistakenly including an innocent man in one of his “Wheel of Fugitive” social media videos, which spotlight suspects weekly.

As the protests continue into the weekend—many timed to coincide with Donald Trump’s birthday parade—organizers say they remain committed to keeping their demonstrations peaceful and focused on justice.

For immigrant families already torn apart and children left behind, the pain is real and urgent. Advocates say now is the time for compassion and accountability—not deadly threats from those sworn to protect and serve.
