Elon Musk Leaves Trump Administration After Slamming ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ as Wasteful Spending

Elon Musk is officially ending his time as a government adviser under President Donald Trump. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO announced his departure Wednesday via X (formerly Twitter), where he thanked Trump for the opportunity to help reduce government waste through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). But Musk didn’t leave quietly—his exit came with strong words about the president’s latest legislative proposal.

The bill in question, a major part of Trump’s agenda, combines tax cuts with tougher immigration policies. But Musk says the price tag is too high. “It’s a massive spending bill,” he said during an interview with CBS. “It undermines the work we were doing at DOGE.” Musk criticized the measure for ballooning the national deficit and joked, “A bill can be big or beautiful, but I don’t think it can be both.”
Musk’s comments drew support from some Republican lawmakers. Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin said he understands Musk’s disappointment and hopes the Senate will push for deeper cuts. Meanwhile, Speaker Mike Johnson defended the bill’s balance but acknowledged it may still face tweaks as it moves through Congress.

The White House said it plans to send a package of proposed spending cuts to Congress, including $1.1 billion from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and $8.3 billion in foreign aid—moves that align with DOGE’s mission. Despite this, watchdog groups say the bill could add trillions to the deficit.
While Musk initially entered government with high hopes—once predicting DOGE would cut $1 trillion—he now admits he underestimated the challenges of navigating Washington. “The federal bureaucracy situation is much worse than I realized,” he said.

Even as he leaves government service, Musk’s comments could influence ongoing budget talks. Republican Senators like Mike Lee are already using his criticisms to push for more aggressive cuts in the Senate’s version of the bill.

Though Musk has enjoyed a close relationship with Trump in the past, his departure signals a shift. He’s now refocusing on his companies and stepping back from political involvement. “I think I’ve done enough,” he said.
Still, his influence lingers. Whether lawmakers take his warnings seriously remains to be seen, but his dramatic exit has certainly added pressure to an already tense budget battle.
