Jesse Williams’ Ex, Aryn Drake-Lee, Fights For Custody Of Their Kids

Aryn Drake-Lee, the ex-wife of actor Jesse Williams, is pushing back after a court awarded Williams full legal custody over their children’s healthcare decisions. In newly filed court documents, Drake-Lee called the ruling a serious violation of her parental rights and claimed the decision was made without proper evidence or due process.

The former couple, who share two children—11-year-old daughter Sadie and 9-year-old son Maceo—have had a lengthy and complicated custody battle since their divorce in 2017. Most recently, Williams accused Drake-Lee of interfering with a medical decision regarding their daughter’s orthodontic treatment. According to the Grey’s Anatomy actor, Drake-Lee allegedly confronted the orthodontist, told him she didn’t approve the treatment, and threatened legal action if he proceeded. Williams responded by filing an emergency motion, requesting sole legal custody over healthcare matters for the children, which the court granted.
Now, Drake-Lee is asking the court to reconsider.

In her filing, Drake-Lee, 43, strongly denied Williams’ allegations and claimed the judge’s decision was made without a formal hearing or any direct evidence of harm or danger. She argues that the ruling was based entirely on hearsay and lacked the legal process required by both California law and the U.S. Constitution.
“I assert that no facts, evidence, or substantiated findings of harm, danger, or unfitness were presented to justify such a serious infringement on my parental rights,” Drake-Lee wrote.

She also raised a unique legal argument, saying that their children are protected by a private trust in which they are the sole beneficiaries. According to her, any government action involving their physical or emotional well-being—without an immediate risk or due process—violates the terms of that trust.

Drake-Lee is now asking the court to reverse its decision and restore her shared legal custody rights, at least when it comes to making health-related choices for their kids. As of now, Jesse Williams has not made a public statement about her latest motion.
The two were married from 2012 to 2017, and their divorce was finalized in 2020 after years of back-and-forth over custody and parenting arrangements. In 2024, Williams requested more joint custody and increased visitation time, aiming for a more balanced parenting schedule.
