Chris Brown Arrested in Manchester for Alleged 2023 Club Assault

Chris Brown was arrested in the early hours of Thursday, May 15, at a hotel in Manchester, England. The arrest stems from a nightclub incident in London that happened over two years ago, where the singer is accused of attacking a music producer.

According to British authorities, Brown, 36, was detained at the Lowry Hotel shortly after arriving in the U.K. on a private jet. Police say the arrest is related to an alleged assault that took place on February 19, 2023, at Tape nightclub in Hanover Square, London. While police did not name Brown directly—standard procedure in the U.K.—they confirmed that a man had been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and was taken into custody.

The alleged victim, music producer Abraham Diaw, claims Brown struck him over the head with a bottle multiple times and kicked him while he was on the ground. Diaw previously told The Sun, “He hit me over the head two or three times. My knee collapsed as well.” He has also filed a $16 million civil lawsuit against Brown, seeking compensation for the injuries and personal losses he says he suffered from the altercation.
So far, Brown has not publicly commented on the arrest, and his spokesperson has not responded to media inquiries. It is also unclear if the singer remains in custody or if he has been released.

This isn’t Brown’s first run-in with the law. The artist has a long history of violent incidents, beginning with the widely publicized 2009 assault on then-girlfriend Rihanna. Since then, he’s been linked to several altercations, including a 2012 nightclub fight involving Drake, a parking lot scuffle with Frank Ocean in 2013, and multiple other reported assaults over the years. Some of these cases resulted in probation, short jail stints, and court-ordered restraining orders.
The timing of this arrest is notable, as Brown is scheduled to begin the European leg of his Breezy Bowl XX Tour on June 8 in Amsterdam. It remains to be seen whether his legal troubles will impact those tour dates, including performances planned in the U.K.
