Michelle Obama Breaks Her Silence on Divorce Rumors
Michelle Obama is setting the record straight about her marriage to Barack Obama—and the answer isn’t what the rumor mill wants to hear.

During a recent episode of Sophia Bush’s Work in Progress podcast, the former First Lady opened up about how her life has changed since leaving the White House in 2017. Now navigating a new chapter of personal freedom, Michelle admitted that many people have misunderstood her choices, even assuming she and Barack are headed for divorce. But according to Michelle, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

“It’s the first time in my life all of my choices are for me,” she said, explaining that, for years, her focus had always been on others—her daughters, her husband, and the responsibilities that came with being First Lady. “I have to make sure the girls are okay, or my husband’s president, so I can’t do that,” she recalled. “Now, I can’t blame my decisions or indecisions on anyone but me.”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fk2sqPfufQo
Michelle acknowledged that this new mindset hasn’t come without judgment. “So much so that this year, people… couldn’t even fathom that I was making a choice for myself,” she said. “They had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing.”
She called out the tendency to label a woman’s independence as something negative, saying, “This couldn’t be a grown woman just making a set of decisions for herself, right? But that’s what society does to us.”

Adding his own perspective, Barack Obama recently shared during a talk at Hamilton College that his presidency wasn’t easy on their relationship. “I was in a deep deficit with my wife,” he admitted. “So I have been trying to dig myself out of that hole by doing occasionally fun things.”

Still, the love remains strong between the two. Barack posted a sweet Valentine’s Day message to Michelle this year with a photo of them smiling together, writing, “Thirty-two years together and you still take my breath away.”
Michelle’s journey is one of reclaiming her time, peace, and identity—and doing so without apology. She’s not walking away from her marriage. She’s walking into the fullest version of herself, and in the process, showing others—especially women—that it’s okay to put yourself first.
