Stephen A. Smith is open to the idea of running for president in 2028—but only if the circumstances are right. The outspoken sports commentator recently shared his thoughts on a potential political future, making it clear that financial stability would be a key factor in his decision.

Speaking with Daily Mail ahead of Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans, Smith explained that while he has no personal ambition to run, he wouldn’t dismiss the possibility if the public urged him to do so. “I have no desire to do this, but assuming that I’m well off, that I have lots of money, and money is no longer a concern,” Smith said. “If the American people came to me and looked at me and said, ‘Yo, man, we want you to run for office,’ and I had a legitimate shot to win the presidency of the United States, I’m not gonna lie, I’ll think about that.”

However, Smith emphasized that his financial security would be non-negotiable before considering such a move. “I’m not gonna go to the White House broke,” he added. “I gotta have my money. I gotta have my home. I gotta have my financial situation completely taken care of.” If those conditions were met and he had a “legitimate, bonafide shot” at winning, Smith said he would seriously entertain the idea.

His comments come amid reports that a recent poll ranked him ahead of established Democratic politicians, including former presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker. He also trailed Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro by just one percentage point.

Confident in his appeal, Smith boldly claimed that he could outperform every candidate listed in the poll, including Vice President Kamala Harris, who led with 33% of the votes. “The part that I’m not joking about is I believe I could beat every candidate on that poll,” he stated. “Every candidate that they mentioned, from Kamala Harris right on down to (Pete) Buttigieg and to Tim Walz. I’d beat all of them. I do believe that. I really do.”
