A 33-year-old woman from the U.S. has become stranded in Pakistan after her plans to marry a 19-year-old man she met online fell apart. Onijah Andrew Robinson, an African American woman, traveled to Karachi in October to marry Nidal Ahmed Memon, a young man she had been in contact with. However, Memon’s family intervened and blocked their marriage plans, leaving Robinson with no place to stay. She visited Memon’s family home, only to find the residence abandoned and locked up, as his family had fled the area. Undeterred, Robinson staged a sit-in outside the house, which garnered significant attention in Pakistan and made headlines across the country.

With her tourist visa expiring, an NGO offered to help her return to the U.S., but Robinson refused. Instead, she appeared in multiple viral videos where she spoke about her “plan” to rebuild Pakistan’s infrastructure. In one video, she made an extraordinary demand, asking for 100,000 Pakistani Rupees from the government and insisting that $20,000 in cash be provided by the end of the week. “The government needs to fix these streets… it’s ridiculous here, I don’t like it. You all need to understand that Pakistan needs new buses, taxis, and cars. Please listen to me, my name is Onijah Ahmed, wife of Nidal Ahmed,” she said in a video, according to Mint.com. In another video, Robinson claimed that she would be traveling to Dubai with her “husband” but was still searching for him.

The Pakistani government, unable to get Robinson to cooperate, took further action and placed her in a psychiatric department at Karachi’s Jinnah Post Graduate Hospital for a mental health examination. During this time, Robinson’s son spoke out, revealing that she had a history of mental health struggles. He described her as “mentally unstable” with impaired judgment, which he said had contributed to the ongoing situation in Pakistan. Robinson’s family had already purchased a flight ticket to bring her back to the U.S., but she refused to board the plane, leading to delays in her return.

In a recent video message, Robinson admitted to being in a difficult financial situation, which appeared to be another reason for her reluctance to leave Pakistan. “I would like you guys to book my ticket back to New York,” she said. “Money is short right now, and I will appreciate it.” As of now, it seems that Robinson has finally expressed her willingness to cooperate and return to the U.S., though the situation remains ongoing.
