The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has escalated the recall of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips to the highest risk level, classifying it as a “Class I” recall. This update, issued on Monday, comes after the chips were initially recalled in December 2024 due to undeclared milk ingredients, which can cause severe allergic reactions in individuals with milk allergies. The recall now carries a heightened warning, as it poses the risk of serious or life-threatening health consequences, including potential death.

The affected product includes 6,344 bags of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips, each weighing 13 ounces, and were distributed in Oregon and Washington. According to the FDA’s announcement, the batch was already removed from store shelves, but consumers who purchased the chips are urged to dispose of them immediately if they still have them at home. The recall only affects this specific batch of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips, and no other Frito-Lay products are involved.

A “Class I” recall is the most severe category issued by the FDA, meaning there is a reasonable probability that exposure to the product could result in serious adverse health consequences or even death. While the product was removed from stores shortly after the recall announcement, the FDA urges consumers to remain vigilant, particularly those with milk allergies who may unknowingly have the chips in their possession.

For consumers with concerns or who have questions about the recall, Frito-Lay has provided customer service contact information, and the company is working in collaboration with the FDA to ensure that the affected products are no longer in circulation. The FDA is closely monitoring the situation and taking appropriate actions to safeguard public health.
