Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley didn’t hold back their thoughts on Bronny James’ NBA debut during “Inside the NBA,” especially following the historic moment when he played alongside his father, LeBron James. The season opener for the Los Angeles Lakers marked a milestone, as the father-son duo became the first to share the court in an NBA game.

Despite the significance of the occasion, both O’Neal and Barkley emphasized that Bronny, a 20-year-old rookie, still has some developing to do. Before Bronny entered the game in the second quarter against the Minnesota Timberwolves on October 22, Barkley offered his candid take during the pregame show. “Bronny is a prospect. Number one, I’m glad he’s healthy,” he said, referencing Bronny’s recovery from cardiac arrest in July 2023, which had sidelined him for part of his freshman season at USC.

Barkley then assessed Bronny’s readiness for the NBA, stating, “I think he should be in the G League. He’s not ready to play in the NBA right now.” He pointed out that Bronny’s defensive skills are his strongest asset, saying, “He’s neither a true point guard nor a shooting guard. To take the pressure off him and allow him to improve, he should be in the G League.”

When Bronny finally made his debut, it was brief. He played only three minutes, missing two shots and grabbing one rebound before leaving the game. Still, the crowd at Crypto.com Arena cheered for the historic occasion, even though his playing time was limited.
After the Lakers secured a 110-103 victory over the Timberwolves, O’Neal reflected on the night’s significance. “Great moment, great accomplishment. Would have loved to see him play more. Now that this debut is over, I think he can focus on getting better,” the Hall of Fame center said.

However, O’Neal also provided a dose of reality. “He’s not going to be in the starting lineup, probably not the second lineup either. If I’m him, I’m working to find a role, get into a rotation, and establish a flow,” he noted. He recognized the added pressure Bronny faces because of his father’s fame, explaining, “Because of his last name, we want him to be great, but as LeBron has said, there are 450 of us [in the NBA], and only a few rookies have an immediate impact.”
In spite of their critiques, both Barkley and O’Neal acknowledged the importance of the moment for the James family. O’Neal concluded by praising Bronny’s dedication: “He works hard, he’s willing to learn, so I wish him well. But this was a great accomplishment for the James family.”
