Former Tuskegee President Benjamin Payton Dies
An HBCU is in mourning this week. In sad news out of Tuskegee University, the school’s president, Dr. Benjamin F. Payton has died. Payton was the fifth president of the school, serving in the role for almost 30 years.

Dr. Benjamin F. Payton served as the university’s fifth president from 1981 until Aug. 1, 2010. He graduated with honors from four different colleges, including South Carolina State University, Harvard University, Columbia University and Yale University.
The family hour will be held on Saturday at Peoples Funeral Home in Tuskegee at 7 p.m. Payton’s funeral will be held on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Tuskegee University Chapel.
“Tuskegee University is deeply saddened at the loss of the university’s 5th President, Dr. Benjamin F. Payton. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and the entire Tuskegee University community,” said seventh president Dr. Brian L. Johnson.
