Gabby Douglas Responds To Backlash After National Anthem Controversy
Gabby Douglas didn’t place her hand on her chest as the U.S. National Anthem played at the Rio Olympics medal ceremony, and people weren’t too happy.

On August 10, the young gymnast hopped on Twitter to apologize, acknowledging the “honor” of representing the U.S. gymnastics team.
“First I want to say thank you everyone for all your support!” she said. “In response to a few tweets I saw tonight, I always stand at attention out of respect for our country whenever the national anthem is played. I never meant any disrespect and apologize if I offended anyone. I’m so overwhelmed at what our team accomplished today and overjoyed that we were able to bring home another gold for our country!”
We’re sure it was an honest mistake. After all, the gold medal winner has been working hard.
She told Risen magazine last month:
“I train six days a week. I have Sundays off and I do about four to six hours in the gym depending on what day it is because sometimes my gym schedule is different each day. And man, it’s just intense. A lot of doing it over and over and over again, it’s just challenging in the gym and it’s very tough.”
She was probably just taking a breather.
