Today is Solange Knowles‘ 30th birthday, and the singer/songwriter took to her Instagram to write an incredible open letter, letting her fans in on the different stages of her life over the past three decades.

Through the post she marked the ups and downs of her life, the loves gained and lost, and the realization that she is finally starting to understand, and appreciate, her own self. She finished with a heartfelt thank you: “I saw all of that to say…dont eveeer let anyone write your story for you. They can talk, they can doubt, and they can say what they wana, but only you have the words to narrate this ting we call life. So much gratitude for all your wishes. So much gratitude for love.”
Knowles’ mom, Tina Lawson, also celebrated Solange by posting an adorable throwback pic of her youngest daughter on her 3rd birthday.
