If you want to know why the scene where Sofia punches the hell out of Squeak in “The Color Purple” seems so real, it’s because there was really bad blood between actress Rae Dawn Chong and media maven Oprah Winfrey. Chong recently did an interview where she detailed the reasons why she doesn’t rock with Oprah Winfrey.
Rae Dawn Chong went on “Matty C’s Happy Hour” and described her personal relationship with former talk show queen Oprah Winfrey. They met on the set of the classic film “The Color Purple” and their relationship soured once Rae Dawn Chong starred in “Commando” with Arnold Schwarzenegger. In fact, RDC says Oprah was a “total biotch” to her when she was promoting “Commando.” Rae Dawn Chong remembered, “I starred in ‘Commando.’ And she just wasn’t having me. She’s competitive. She didn’t like me. She just wasn’t having me.”
You’d think the former ’80s It girl would allow sleeping dogs to lie, but that wasn’t the case with this interview. Rae Dawn Chong went on to try to compliment Oprah for her effect on American society’s views on black women and “women of a certain size.” While she tried to compliment Oprah, it just came out sounding more like a backhanded one. While Rae Dawn Chong praised Oprah for her contribution to our culture, she make comments about her weight and complexion. Rae Dawn Chong said, “If you look at the way [Oprah] looks, she looks like 60 years ago she would have been a house keeper luckily. She would have not been a house n**ger she would have been a field n**ger.”
She went on to say, “Imagine being [Oprah]. She has all of the world. All the power in the world … and she only wants something that is only chemical, purely impossible. The thing that’s really great about Oprah that you can’t take away from her is that she’s a great brown-noser.”
