A tenuous ceasefire between Israel and Iran, brokered through the combined efforts of the United States and Qatar, is currently under severe strain. Despite the agreement’s intention to de-escalate tensions following twelve days of intense conflict, recent events suggest both parties have engaged in actions that violate its terms, eliciting a strong rebuke from US President Donald Trump.

President Trump has openly expressed his “profound displeasure” with Israel, specifically accusing them of breaching the ceasefire. His directive was unambiguous: an immediate cessation of bombing campaigns and the urgent return of their pilots. This forceful statement underscores the United States’ pressing desire for a definitive end to hostilities and a restoration of stability in the volatile region.

However, almost concurrently with Trump’s admonition, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz publicly accused Iran of violating the truce. In response, he announced his order for “intense strikes” targeting Tehran. This rapid escalation through reciprocal accusations and military actions threatens to unravel the painstakingly negotiated peace.

According to Dan Perry, an analyst specializing in Israeli affairs, the United States’ involvement in the Israel-Iran conflict has been “remarkable” from its inception. Perry highlights the unprecedented direct US attack on Iran, followed by President Trump’s declaration of a ceasefire “on behalf of the parties,” and the subsequent pressure placed on Israel to comply. Perry suggests that Trump is attempting to assert his authority and establish himself as a “sheriff of the region,” though he also acknowledges that this could be a “performative” display.

Regarding Israel’s willingness to abide by Trump’s peace initiative, Perry believes that Israel’s latitude for independent action is more constrained than some commentators perceive. He stated, “Israel cannot completely defy the will of the US. It cannot sustain such a significantly impactful operation without US acquiescence.” This perspective implies that despite Israel’s often assertive posture, its military endeavors are intrinsically linked to, and largely dependent on, the tacit approval of the United States.

The human cost of this renewed conflict is tragically evident. Iran’s judiciary has reported multiple fatalities at Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison, including both staff and visiting family members. These casualties resulted from an Israeli strike on Monday, which hit a portion of the facility. The UN Rights Office has condemned the targeting of Evin Prison as a “grave breach of international humanitarian law,” emphasizing the severe humanitarian implications of the ongoing conflict.

In a cautiously optimistic development, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has affirmed that Iran will honor the truce with Israel, provided that Israel reciprocates. He further indicated Iran’s openness to dialogue and its commitment to safeguarding Iranian interests during any forthcoming negotiations, as reported by Iran’s Nournews media.

A tangible positive outcome of the initial ceasefire has been the gradual resumption of air travel. El Al, Israel’s national carrier, announced a substantial increase in its flight schedule to repatriate tens of thousands of Israeli citizens stranded abroad. The airline plans to utilize its entire fleet to add thousands of seats within the next 24 hours, offering a much-needed relief after widespread flight cancellations across the region followed the outbreak of the Israel-Iran conflict on June 13. The reopening of Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv, after a 12-day closure, signifies a cautious return to normalcy amidst the persistent regional tensions.
