Keke Palmer Says She’s Keeps Her Rent at $1500 to Live Below Her Means

Keke Palmer may have been in the spotlight since she was a child, but she’s not living like a typical Hollywood star. In a recent interview with CNBC, the actress and author opened up about her approach to money—and it’s not what you’d expect from someone with a successful career in entertainment.

“I live under my means. I think it’s incredibly important,” she said. “If I have $1 million in my pocket, my rent is going to be $1,500—that’s how underneath my means I’m talking.”
This mindset isn’t new for Palmer. She’s talked before about how her parents influenced her financial habits. “I learned from my parents very early on because they knew their limitations with money and finances,” she shared on the “Club Shay Shay” podcast last year. “I believe in saving and frugality… I don’t play around with that.”

Palmer began working at just nine years old, landing a role in Barbershop 2: Back in Business. By the time she was a teenager, she was starring in her own Nickelodeon show, True Jackson, VP. Despite her early success, she remained focused on budgeting and saving.
“My parents, at their best, made $40,000 a year,” she recalled. “I was making that a show.”

Even though she’s known for her big red carpet moments—like her recent look at Vanity Fair’s Oscars party, where she wore a sparkling vintage Versace gown once worn by Christina Aguilera—Palmer still keeps her lifestyle grounded. She wore the shimmering mesh dress with chandelier earrings and rhinestone heels, serving Hollywood glam without losing her down-to-earth charm.

Palmer’s approach to money has sparked some debate, especially on shows like The Rickey Smiley Morning Show, where co-host Gary With Da Tea questioned whether someone with her income should be paying $1,500 in rent. But Palmer stands firm in her belief that staying financially smart is key to long-term success.
