Opening his remarks, Perry quoted Stone’s soulful track “No More Rain (In This Cloud),” using the lyric “In time, it gets a little better” to offer comfort to her family. He also shared a personal memory of the singer, recalling how she once invited him to join her on stage for a performance of “Brotha.” However, the most powerful moment of Perry’s eulogy came when he spoke out about the mistreatment of Stone by the music industry.

He passionately addressed the unfair treatment she had faced, especially from promoters and record labels who had failed to compensate her adequately. “Women like Angie Stone, who’ve been in the industry for so long, you’re going to forget about what she did? All the people she helped and put on?” Perry said, his voice rising with emotion. “You have to go through something to write a song like ‘20 Dollars.’” As Perry’s anger grew, he voiced his frustration over how Stone, who had given so much to the industry, had been exploited. “All those years, all those songs, all that money that was owed to her—where is it? It’s wrong!” he declared.

Perry also shared how deeply Stone had impacted him personally, revealing that he had turned to her music for inspiration while working on his film Straw. “I’ve always loved Angie and her music,” Perry said. “There’s one song I couldn’t get out of my head while writing, called ‘20 Dollars.’ It speaks to so many of our struggles, and it’s so soulful—she was preaching.” Stone, who tragically passed away on March 1, had a storied career and was still actively working, having released her latest album Love Language in May 2023. Despite the challenges she faced, Stone’s legacy remains impactful, with her contributions to music being honored by many, including her three Grammy nominations.
