Trump Lifts Restrictions On Immigration Arrests At Sensitive Locations, Including Churches and Schools

The Trump administration has rescinded policies that limited immigration arrests at sensitive locations like schools and churches, allowing federal agents to enforce immigration laws without restrictions. This decision, announced on Tuesday, reverses over a decade of guidance from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which restricted enforcement at these locations. The Department of Homeland Security, in a statement, emphasized that the policy change would help apprehend criminal aliens, including murderers and rapists, who had sought refuge in such locations. “Criminals will no longer be able to hide in America’s schools and churches to avoid arrest,” the department asserted.

This move is part of President Trump’s broader effort to fulfill campaign promises to carry out mass deportations, especially of those in the U.S. illegally. Advocates for immigrant rights, however, expressed concern that this policy could have harmful consequences.

Olivia Golden, interim executive director of the Center for Law and Social Policy, warned, “This action could have devastating consequences for immigrant families and their children, including U.S. citizen children, deterring them from receiving medical attention, seeking out disaster relief, attending school, and carrying out everyday activities.” The new policy could also result in children witnessing a parent’s detention or arrest in sensitive places like schools or churches.
While this policy change was anticipated as part of Trump’s promise to dismantle Biden-era immigration restrictions, it clashes with efforts in local areas to protect vulnerable populations. For instance, California’s Fresno Unified School District has a strong policy against immigration enforcement on campuses without a valid court order, and Chicago Public Schools has pledged not to cooperate with ICE.

Similarly, religious institutions that have historically provided sanctuary to migrants, like churches, are standing firm. Rev. K Karper of St. Paul & St. Andrew United Methodist Church in New York stated that his church would continue to challenge ICE officers without warrants, maintaining a sanctuary for those in need. “We’re going to make it clear to anybody who’s in the building, who feels threatened by this that they have rights,” Karper explained, underscoring the church’s commitment to offering safety, regardless of immigration status.
