Donald Trump’s inauguration pastor, Reverend Lorenzo Sewell, is facing criticism after launching a cryptocurrency called “LORENZO.” The token, pitched as a divine tool to fulfill “God’s vision,” lost 97% of its value shortly after its debut, leaving supporters and investors in disbelief.

Sewell introduced the token just hours after delivering a speech at Trump’s swearing-in ceremony. He took to X (formerly Twitter) to encourage his followers to support the project, writing, “I need you to do me a favor and go and get that coin in order for us to accomplish the vision that God has called us to do in our Earth.” Despite his enthusiasm, the token’s performance was far from miraculous. According to GeckoTerminal, LORENZO launched at 18:50 GMT, briefly peaked at $0.0353710, and then crashed nearly 97% within 30 minutes.

The backlash online was swift and scathing. One user on X joked, “This pastor going to hell bruh lol,” while the account Republicans Against Trump asked bluntly, “Have you no shame?”

Sewell, who has been a pastor for seven years, is no stranger to controversy. A vocal Trump supporter, he has hosted the former president at his church and attended numerous pro-Trump rallies and Republican conventions. During Trump’s inauguration, Sewell borrowed from Martin Luther King Jr.’s iconic speech, declaring, “Let freedom ring” and, “Free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty, we are free at last.” He closed his address with the statement, “If you believe what the spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”

As criticism over the token’s collapse grew, Sewell tried to reassure his supporters. He claimed, “I have permanently locked my tokens into a Liquidity Pool so that I will never sell on the community but rather just earn fees as our token continues to flourish!”

This isn’t the first time a religious leader’s crypto venture has sparked controversy. Last year, Pastor Eli Regalado was accused of using religious appeals to solicit investments for a fraudulent cryptocurrency project, allegedly spending the funds on luxury items. Similarly, Pastor Francier Obando Pinillo faced 26 fraud charges in January for a crypto scheme he claimed was inspired by a divine dream.

Reverend Sewell’s misstep with LORENZO serves as a cautionary tale about the risks of mixing faith with finance—especially in the unpredictable world of cryptocurrency. With the token’s value in shambles and questions mounting, the next chapter of Sewell’s career remains uncertain.
