Jay-Z and The Roots made beautiful music together in 2001 for Jay-Z’s “MTV Unplugged” album. But now it looks like Jay-Z is completely getting in their lane.

Jay-Z is expected to announce that he’s working with Budweiser, Live Nation and the City of Philadelphia on a two-day music festival. In theory this sounds like a great idea, but The Roots have been doing the same thing for years. Take a look at the similarities:

  • The Roots will hold their fifth annual two-day picnic on June 2nd and 3rd, while Jay-Z’s event will be held on September 1st and 2nd
  • Both events will be held in Philadelphia
  • Jay-Z will headline his event, just as The Roots have
  • Both feature line-ups of 20+ acts (Jay-Z’s additional acts have not yet been revealed)
  • Jay-Z line-up is described as “eclectic,” and The Roots have consistently delivered artists who fall outside of the mainstream

Jay-Z proudly represents Brooklyn, so why isn’t he bringing his music festival to New York instead of stepping into The Roots hometown of Philadelphia? The good news is, an unspecified portion of its proceeds will benefit the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey. So while Jay-Z may not be presenting an original concept to Philly, he is using his star power for good.

Tickets go on sale May 23rd via ticketmaster.com and livenation.com.
