Former Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger asked why Williams, who was recently fired by Woods after 12 years, was suddenly Mr. Media after carrying Scott’s golf bag Sunday.

CADDY SHACKED: Are you a Steve Williams hacker or back?

“Steve Williams breaks the unwritten caddy rule, by talking to the press,” tweeted the Zinger. “Most don’t, a few do at times when appropriate. #notapopularguy.”

English golfer Chris Wood tweeted: “Steve Williams taken all the attention off Adam Scott’s fantastic win! Played great and nobody is talking about him this morning!!!”

Even U.S. tennis star Andy Roddick weighed in on Twitter. “Has anyone seen the Steve Williams interview from after Adam Scott’s win today? Am I missing something? Was Steve the one actually playing?”

TIGER VS. STEVE Will Tiger or Williams have a better PGA?

Columnist Gregg Doyel of CBSSports.com counted 27 uses of I, me and my by Williams in his 90-second interview — with only one mention of Scott.

“Given who he is and what he does — he’s a caddie, for crying out loud — Stevie Williams put on one of the most narcissistic displays I’ve ever seen in professional sports,” writes Doyel.

But sportscaster Len Berman tweeted you can’t blame Williams for answering questions put to him by CBS.

“Steve Williams used to be ripped for being a mummy, now he’s being ripped for being a chatterbox. You can’t have it both ways,” tweeted Berman.

In case you missed it, here’s the New Zealander’s interview with Feherty in which he talks about himself being a great “front-runner” on the golf course and the race track.

Despite being on the bag for 13 of Woods’ 14 major championships, Williams said this was the “best win I’ve ever had.”

CBS’ Nick Faldo was “shocked” by Williams’ comments which he thought were directed at Woods.

“That was quite a little, a little more than a dig there, I would say,” Faldo said.

Maybe the crowd led Williams to open up. Golf blogger Stephanie Wei says the gallery was chanting “Stevie” as he walked up the 18th fairway with Scott.
