Cliff Lee has thrown a huge curveball into the race to sign him, making his own pitch to return to Philadelphia for a lot less money than the Yankees are offering, according to a source.

With the Yankees and Rangers seemingly going head-to-head to acquire the lefty, Lee approached the Phillies, telling them how much he enjoyed playing for them and asking them if there were any way for him to return, according to the source.

That got the Phillies’ attention, although their offer is believed to be for no more than five years and, according to the source, Lee would be leaving “a lot of money” on the table.

Up until now, the Phils have shown no inclination to spend any money this winter, allowing Jayson Werth to go to Washington without pursuing any of the power-hitting outfielders on the market to replace him.
