Heisman season is upon us and the winner is set to be announced Saturday, December 9. While Oklahoma University’s Baker Mayfield is the frontrunner for taking home the trophy in New York City tomorrow night, Lamar Jackson and Bryce Love have had storied seasons that are nothing to sneeze at. CASSIUS put together a who’s who guide to the three 2017 Heisman Trophy nominees.

With last month’s crotch-grabbing “scandal” behind him, Baker Mayfield is the leading favorite to hoist up the Heisman Trophy this year and it’s because of the incredibly strong season he’s managed to put together at Oklahoma. His legend will likely continue to grow as he leads his team to the Rose Bowl and hopefully the National Championship. The stats he’s put up this season are crazy, with a 203.8 passer rating that’s better than Russell Wilson’s 191.8. His yards per attempt are better than 1999 Michael Vick and he continues to best his own stats from last year. We’re all Lamar Jackson fans, too, but Mayfield’s passing numbers eclipse Jackson’s. He’s getting better every season and his NFL potential is scary.

Louisville’s Lamar Jackson won the award last year and he could be the first ever to repeat. His numbers were good last season and though he’s got nine fewer touchdowns this go ’round, he’s still got more completions and his passing efficiency has slightly gone up. Plus, he’s still killing it with 3,489 passing yards and 1,443 rushing yards thus far this season. While Baker is favored, Jackson’s ability to maintain such solid numbers season over season shouldn’t be forgotten, and it won’t be even among the 2018 NFL Draft’s talented quarterbacks.

Bryce Love, Stanford University

If you’re looking for the most consistent and pure runner of a running back in college football, its Stanford’s Bryce Love. With Stanford sitting at 9-4 and 7-2 in its conference, Love has been dominating the run game who was has rushed for over 100 yards in all but one game the season. And during the first half of the season, it was nothing for him to put up a 200+ yard game. He tweaked his ankle injury in the first half of the Pac-12 matchup with Washington which slowed him down a bit, but not too much as he still sits at seventh on the school’s all-time rushing list. Though Love will likely have a lauded NFL career, he’s got a solid fallback plan of being a stem cell researcher.
