When Donald Trump made a speech condemning the protests against the national anthem that have taken place in the NFL, the response from the sports world was swift, and clear. Entire teams withdrew participation from the national anthem, while many more than usual kneeled, or stood in solidarity, at the very least, with those who were kneeling.

While at first, this response in solidarity with protesters is inspiring, it’s also pretty phony. Because before Trump made his comments, a lot of these folks weren’t interested in kneeling or even showing public support for those who were kneeling.
