According to The Root, they wanted to kill him over a fight he had with another guard named Thomas Jordan Driver, who is also a member of the KKK.

Both Driver and Moran during this time were correctional officers at the Florida Department of Corrections. Homeland Security Investigation Agent James C. Spero said. “These men had positions of trust, which they violated when they conspired to kill a former inmate, and we worked closely with our law enforcement partners to ensure they are held accountable for their crimes.”

In 2015 the three men were arrested after an investigation. A picture of the inmate they wanted killed was handed to another by Driver and told to put him, “6 feet under.”

Attorney General Bondi said. “We will continue to work daily to ensure the KKK or any other hate-filled organization is unable to inflict violence on the citizens of our great state.”

Both Moran and Newcomb face up to 30 years in prison, but a sentencing date has not been set.
