Wenona Hauser Small, wife of Delrawn Small, an unarmed Brooklyn man fatally shot by police, seeks justice in the form of a $25 million wrongful death lawsuit.
Small, 37, was gunned down on July 4 in East New York by Officer Wayne Isaacs, who was off duty at the time. According to a video obtained by the New York Daily News, Isaacs shot Small seconds after he approached Isaac’s driver’s side.

“He committed cold-blooded murder,” Wenona said to the Daily News. “It was disgusting. He just shot him dead with no justification.”
At the time of the shooting, Small was accompanied by his current girlfriend, her daughter, and their infant child. Though the Smalls were not on romantic terms at the time of the shooting, Weona says they recently discussed reconciling. The couple married on January 10, 2006.
The Small family believes the shooting was mishandled, as the NYPD released a timeline of events framing the shooting as a road rage incident where Isaacs was repeatedly punched in the face. Needless to say, the video did not corroborate their justification.
“I feel it was a cover-up,” Wenona said. “Then they were assassinating (Delrawn’s) character. But I’m willing to wait for justice to be done.”
On Wednesday, Wenona submitted a notice to the city comptroller’s office accusing Isaacs of violating her husband’s civil rights. The filing also called the use of force negligent and demanded the NYPD re-examine policies on de-escalating confrontations.
The office of State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is investigating the shooting. In the interim, Isaac’s was stripped of his gun and badge.
Several protests erupted within the past month, with the local community calling for justice and Isaac’s termination by the 79th Precinct in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
