After the massive success of Ava DuVernay‘s Barbie doll which sold out in a matter of minutes, the need for representation amongst women of color in toys is evident. While African American dolls have been available for purchase for decades, few dolls hair texture is similar to the little black girls playing with them.
Model, Mala Bryan recently launched Malaville Dolls which come in various brown hues and different textures of kinky/curly, natural hair.
The St. Lucia native had the idea since she was 18-years-old and a situation where she couldn’t find darker barbies for a toy drive reminded her that there was a market for her product. Seven years later, Bryan’s vision has come to fruition.
Bryan says her dolls are meant for, “children of all races, for black/brown children with Afro/curly hair children to have dolls that they can relate to, and for children of other races to have diversity in their doll collection.”
There are currently four Malaville dolls named Maisha, Mala, Malina and Mhina. They even have their own personalities and Instagram accounts where they show off their gorgeous fashions and luxurious hair.
