According to the Huffington Post, the structure was dismantled on Wednesday and will be loaned to the Stony Island Arts Bank thanks to the Tamir Rice Foundation. While Rice’s mother Samaria Rice was initially reluctant to move the gazebo, since the city finally agreed to not demolish it, she later changed her mind and realized “[the gazebo’s] historical significance and [the] importance of preserving it,” Rice family Attorney Billy Joe Mills recently told ABC News.

[The gazebo] is one of the strongest national symbols of the current era of civil rights and police brutality,” Mills said. “We hope that it will continue to serve as that symbol but that by installing it at prominent institutions it will be elevated further in importance and power.”

Rice’s death took place in 2014 when officer Timothy Loehman shot and killed the boy, mistaking Rice’s toy BB gun for a rifle. In 2014, all officers were acquitted of murder, but the city paid out $8 million to the Rice family in a civil lawsuit earlier this year.

A man who was found guilty of cracking a chair over a white gay couple in a NYC eatery was sentenced to nine years in prison for the attack.

According to New York Daily News, Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Arlene Goldberg told Bayna Lekheim El-Amin, 42, that why he may have been slapped by one of the victims with a canvas bag, he had no right to react with the brutal beating at Dallas BBQ.

That you did not cause serious physical injury to them was only by luck,” Goldberg said.

El-Amin, who is an LGBT activist, was also accused of saying gay slurs to the two white gay men, which El-Amin denies. After being whacked in the face with a bag by victim Jonathan Snipes, knocked Snipes to the ground and stomped on his head. Later, he picked up a chair and swung it at their heads, the newspaper noted.

El-Amin stressed that he believes that race played a factor in the outcome of his case.

I feel like my race was involved in that … if the situation was reversed and I would have went up to them, it would have been different. It wouldn’t have come out the same,” he said.
