aaliyah-rkellyWhen news broke that Lifetime was going to make a biopic about the life of late R&B singer Aaliyah, we all knew immediately that her family wouldn’t be too pleased. As expected, the Haughton family vowed to shut down production on the biopic. Many believed it was because Lifetime didn’t contact them for their input in the first place. Now, we hear it may be because of something else.

According to reports, Lifetime plans on exploring the controversial relationship between Aaliyah and her first musical mentor R. Kelly.  Many fans remember the drama that surrounded Kelly and his then-teen protege. It is alleged that Kelly, then 27, secretly and illegally married Aaliyah when she was just fifteen years old. When the media got ahold of the story, both Kelly and Aaliyah denied the story. However, a marriage license surfaced that showed the couple had married, only after Aaliyah’s age was falsified to 18. The union was eventually annulled by her family.

The lifetime biopic is set to cover Aaliyah’s life from the age of ten until she died in a fiery plane crash at the tender age of 22. Aaliyah is set to be played by Disney star Zendaya Coleman.

There film’s executive producer Debra Martin Chase said, “Aaliyah’s personal and professional relationship with R. Kelly will be explored with care in the film as we set out to depict her life with the utmost respect. Above all else, it’s our hope to inspire an entirely new generation with her music and larger-than-life talent.”

We can’t wait to see how this plays out.
